The painter and graphic artist Jacob Pins was born on January 17th, 1917 in Hoexter. In 1936 he left Germany for Palestine fleeing from the anti-semitic persecution of the National Socialists.
After the fall of the Third Reich, he renewed his contacts with his native town of Hoexter and in 2003 donated a comprehensive portion of his art to the town. In recognition of his reconciliation efforts, the town of Hoexter awarded him an honorary citizenship in September 2003. Jacob Pins died in Jerusalem on December 4th, 2005.
The Jacob Pins Society, founded towards the end of 2002, administers the hundreds of items comprising the donated art. Furthermore, in addition to the documentation and publicity regarding the artistic accomplishments of Jacob Pins, the Society’s goal is to provide a venue also for other selected contemporary artists.
Along with the administration of the donated works, the Jacob Pins Society has accepted the duty to commemorate the memory of Jacob Pins’ parents, Dr. Leo and Ida Pins, as well as all other Hoexter Jews who became victims of the holocaust and to create awareness of this by means of a permanent exhibition.
